Bungy jump off a bridge, a pod or
swing in a canyon. You can't leave Queenstown till you've jumped!
Bungy Jumping - a brief history
The people of Vanuatu in the Pacific started it by throwing themselves
from huge towers with nothing more than a few vines tied their feet.
This ancient ritual inspired the Oxford University Dangerous Sports
Club to try a few experimental jumps in the 1970’s.
AJ Hackett saw a video of this group in action and teamed with speed-skier
Henry van Asch to test the use of latex rubber cords before the
first extreme jumps were done from a 91m high ski gondola in France.
Bungy Jumping in Queenstown
Commercial bungy jumping was born in 1980’s when AJ Hackett
opened the bungy jump site at the Kawarau Bridge just outside Queesntown.
Since then adventure sports have taken off in Queenstown and bungy
jumping as leapt with it. Various new bungy sites have opened with
a range different types of experiences and new safety standards.
Queenstown has become the "home of bungy".
